Helsing Junction Farm Newsletter May 25th, 2010
Greetings from Helsing Junction Farm! Here come the flowers! Introducing the mini CSA share! We are adding a smaller share called the mini that is designed to feed 1-2 people. It costs $20 per week ($375 for the season). It will come with flowers; there will not be a “no flowers” option available with the mini share. To sign up you can go to our web site at www.helsingfarmcsa.com If you want to switch from a small share to a mini share please contact us via e-mail or phone. We will be offering 150 mini shares this season. Single CSA boxes will be available this year: For those of you who can’t commit to the whole season, we will also have single boxes available for purchase via our new on-line farm store. Mini boxes will be $22 per week, small boxes will be $28 and large boxes will be $38. You will be able to purchase single CSA boxes beginning June 15th via our on-line store. Fruit shares are coming to HJF! We will be working with an organic co-op of 6 small farms from Eastern Washington this year to provide a fruit share. It will be available through our on-line store. We’ll have exact details in the next newsletter, June 1st. Projected start date: Our anticipated start dates this year are June 15-June 18, depending on where/when you pick up your box. We will be sending out another newsletter June 1st that will confirm the date and provide you with the exact address of your drop site and more info about the start of the 2010 season. Drop site info for the 2010 season: We have added 6 new drop sites this year: Lynnwood, Lacey, the Natural Resources Building in Olympia, downtown Olympia at the Olympia Seafood Company and the Central District in Seattle. We have also added a drop site in Hoquiam, which will be held on Fridays and is located just a few blocks from downtown Hoquiam. The Georgetown drop site will still be held on Thursdays. We are changing the Tacoma drop site back to Tuesdays, sorry for the confusion! You can visit our web site for more information on any of these drop sites. If you need to switch drop sites please contact us as you can not go back into our new operating system on your own yet. We’ve been busy planting! Last week we planted asters, snapdragons, sunflowers, corn, cucumbers, summer squash, cipollini onions, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, arugula and more. Farm stand: We’ve begun work on our new farm stand. We’ve got a lead on some really nicely refurbished produce cases and some shelving. We plan to be open the week of June 15th. We’ll have bulk pickles for sale most of August! We’ll alert you via our newsletter the exact dates they will be available and the pricing. We’ll deliver them to your drop site along with a recipe and some fresh dill. So easy and so delicious! If you’ve never canned before, pickles are a great place to start! Efficiency expert: An old friend of Sue’s from high school in Jersey has relocated to Seattle. He’s is an expert in lean production systems and came down to the farm to whip us into shape. On his advice we are redoing our packing shed, CSA box packing line and moving our big commercial refrigerator. Drip irrigation and new pump: We’ve gotten a grant from the USDA to put in 10 acres of drip irrigation, which is much more efficient then the overhead watering system we use now. We are also receiving funds toward purchase of a new energy efficient pump as well. Well that’s all for now. Let’s hope the sun shines and the vegetables grow, we’re getting hungry! Hope you have a flower filled spring! Your farmers, Annie, Sue, Rosalio, Bonfilio, Tomasa, Adelpho, Victor, Oly and Zac Helsing Junction Farm |
